they relate to any sort of conflict of interest arising from
simultaneous corporate ownership of reporting organizations
and performing organizations. The paper discusses the
philosophies of Kant, Mill, Aristotle and Rawls, relating
them to the growing problems of such conflict of interest
enabled in large part by the consolidation trend fueling
mergers and acquisitions. The second and smaller section of
the paper provides concrete example of the problems of
subjectivity in reporting. It provides several examples of
broadcast 'cheerleading' styles dating from as far back as
the 1960s and examines the implications of the 1999 purchase
by the corporate parent of the Dallas Morning News of a
minor stake in Dallas' struggling rofessional basketball
